Anyone who has experienced severe physical pain, as well as deep emotional sorrow, understands what betrayal is all about. Nothing hurts quite as deep as the pain of betrayal. Whether it is the betrayal of a spouse, friend, sibling or child, people at work, people outside, where ever, whoever it be: nothing hurts quite as much or leaves uglier scars. Relationships break up or sometimes it has to go on, like a headless horse, unable to unclasp from its tight grip. Even more painful is when we know we are being betrayed, but become a victim to circumstances.
There is no panacea for betrayal. Only Time and a Forgiving Heart can heal the deep wounds within us. It helps, in a way, to turn wounds into wisdom.
Mark 11:10 of the Bible says:
Hosanna in the highest.
The men and women who followed Jesus and witnessed his many miracles, shouted out to Him as He entered Jerusalem, “Hosanna, Hosanna’; these joyous shouts echoed throughout the hills and valleys of Jerusalem. However, as one studies the gospels, Jesus’ reaction was not one that befitted a King. Rather, according to Luke’s account in his gospel, when Jesus approached Jerusalem, where he would be crucified that Friday, he was moved to tears. “He saw the city and wept over it,” Scripture says.
He wept because the people were not receptive to any of the spiritual blessings that he had come to offer and also because He knew that the multitudes that waved palm leaves and praised God for the long-awaited Messiah would soon be shouting “Crucify him!” Close friends, the crowds who had received many miracles and witnessed all that He had done for them would soon move away. They would dine with Him, but would desert, betray or deny him, at the last moment. And many of those who welcomed him would soon cast the votes which would send him to the cross.
So the anguish and pain of betrayal could not be better borne or understood by Jesus. That is why He is ever forgiving and merciful to those who seek him out and repent.
